69776 - Pthreetle

Pink wooden Mirror dinghy almost airborne in a big wave

1996

Wood kit built by Stephen Heppell on Malcolm Goodwin's jig.

This was the third of four mirrors built by Stephen Heppell . Stephen takes up the story "The first one - a standard Bell built kit, was Pootle. Then came Juliette Heppell's fast blue boat Ptwootle (two, get it?) which was spectacularly fast upwind and she sailed with her sister and then with single handed sailor Hannah Stodel, then came the pink Pthreetle sailed by Melissa Heppell who went onto 470s from there (super fast boat won lots also with next owner Emma Barry) and then finally Phourtle which was Toby Heppell's boat - he went onto 49ers and is now at Yachts and Yachting of course. All Brightlingsea boats back in the days when the town council created a Mirror Millennium garden in honour of the town's Mirror sailors!".

12811

A wooden Mirror dinghy in a garden looking a bit sad

1968

Wood hull built by Unknown builder

This boat is now available, Free to a good home

  • Sail number is 12811
  • She is of wood construction.
  • Alloy Gunter mast, (looks like a Coates Marine 14 SWG mast)
  • Sails - Harper main & jib, and there is a spinnaker
  • Laminated daggerboard and rudder blade also appears to be solid wood
  • Launching trolley.

She does however need some work doing to her before sailing.  The bulkhead at the front of the cockpit needs replacing as does the foredeck starboard side due to rot. She also needs painting and varnishing.

Editor's note - it's fairly clear from the spinnaker setup,  channel shroud fittings, laminated foils, enlarged transom scuppers, outhaul track on boom, Harper sails etc., that this boat has been raced to some extent in the past.

65183 - Zorus

A lime green Mirror dinghy sailing on a lake in a light wind on a dull day

1981

Wood hull built by Unknown builder.

Judith Hawkins takes up the story "Sailed in the Spalding Lincolnshire area by a K. Brown who had her from 1981. I am not sure if he built her or bought it ready made. With the boat was a price list from Bell Woodworking stating that their Chandlery would be opening in March 1986.

1990

My father, Ralph Lindsay Goulden then acquired it for my children in 1990 who were all members of West Lancashire Yacht Club, Southport.

1999

The boat was sold after my father’s death in 1999 to Glyn Sheffield also a WLYC member.

2011

I eventually bought it back from Glyn in 2011.
