This year, the Round was held as part of Bassenthwaite Sailing Club’s Annual Regatta generously sponsored by the new Lakes Distillery.
Five boats, with their own start, took part in the four race series held over the two days of the weekend. The weather was dry and partly sunny but, on Saturday, a force 4 south westerly wind was blowing over, and between the fells making for choppy and squally conditions.
In Saturday’s first race Robert Richardson and Sandy Simpson from Royal Windermere YC took the win from the Bassenthwaite boat of Andy Smith with his young daughter Lily crewing. However, Lily wasn’t happy in the conditions and the Smiths pulled out of the Event.
In the next race it was Dave & Seb Shilling from Derwent Reservoir SC who took up the pursuit and finished second to the Windermere boat with Beaver SC’s Alexander Baird & Emma Rumgay third followed home by Reuben Stockross and crew from Derwent Reservoir.
On Sunday the wind backed to the south allowing the Race Officer to set courses out of the northern bay and down the Lake. This involved long challenging beats into the strong wind but allowed a number of exciting spinnaker legs back from the windward mark.
Results for each boat in both these races were the same as in Saturday’s second race giving Robert & Sandy four bullets the first of which was their discard. So they took another win to add those they achieved recently at both Dee & Looe. Also well done to Alexander Baid and his crew Emma Rumgay on coming third.
Also a well done to Ex Mirror sailors Ben Hill and Gabe Hill on coming 2nd in the Graduate fleet.
