70717 - 80 Not Out

A white GRP Mirror dinghy sailing single handed on a Norfolk Broad with yellow spinnaker set and a reed bank in the background

2012

Foam sandwich hull built by Trident-UK and owned by John Ayres . Ian Ayres takes up the story. "This was my Dad’s 80th birthday present for himself; he had sailed Mirrors since year one (with number 234 - Jo-Bo). The sail numbers shown are 23456, this is our family number (and was our second Mirror); Dad decided he was too old to look after a wooden boat or learn a new sail number......"

Only been used in light airs, the vast majority of which was at Rollesby Broad (for about 5 years - no winter sailing), once or twice at Hickling and for a summer up and down the river Thurne at Potter Heigham. It has never touched salt water, I’m sure it would like to!

This was my Dad’s 80th birthday present for himself; he had sailed Mirrors since year one (with number 234). The sail numbers shown are 23456, this is our family number (and was our second Mirror); Dad decided he was too old to look after a wooden boat or learn a new sail number......

It has only been used in light airs, the vast majority of which was at Rollesby Broad (for about 5 years - no winter sailing), once or twice at Hickling and for a summer up and down the river Thurne at Potter Heigham. It has never touched salt water, I’m sure it would like to!

The boat was supplied and fitted out by Trident, the ISAF sticker registering its hull number - 70717.

It has two sets of Trident sails, one used but perfectly serviceable for club racing, and one set which has probably been used 10 times at most, also one spinnaker. It has a Selden Bermuda mast. There are two sets of foils, one plywood set and one set of laminated racing boards. Comes with combination trailer / trolley.

It is set up for single-handed sailing, with a transom mainsheet, and the spinnaker is set up with a traditional drop pole. Certainly the fastest Mirror I’ve sailed! Sadly with a heavy heart (and an overgrown fleet of my own) I have to let this go as just can’t get enough use out of it myself.
