A total of 9 Mirrors including 3 visitors took to the water on Saturday morning in perfect conditions with the sun shining and a gentle 3 knots of wind from the South West.
A triangle and sausage course had been laid. For the first race the wind shifted making the pin end pay. David and Daniel Coady got away cleanly to be first at the windward mark, hotly pursued by Tom Dean and Ellie Benn. The next beat saw Tom and Ellie losing out to father Rob Dean and Barbra Darling. After losing his spinnaker under the front of the boat on the last run Rob let Barbra through into 2nd place.
After a quick bite of lunch 2 further races took place as the wind became lighter and shiftier. In the second race it was Barbra Darling 1st to the windward mark followed by Ellie’s father Dave who was enjoying sailing the class association Demo boat with Tom and Ellie and David and Dan in pursuit. By the next mark David and Dan managed to sail through into first and hold that position. Barbara held 2nd and Tom and Ellie 3rd.
In final race the wind shifted further to the South necessitating some mark moving. It almost died completely soon after the start. David and Daniel sailed well into a big lead on the first beat only hit a hole in the second beat which allowed Barbra Darling to pass them in some fresh wind on the left of the course. A tangle of lines at the leeward mark slowed Barbara down, allowing David and Dan and Rob Dean back through to take 1st and 2nd with Barbara 3rd.
Congratulations to David and Maisy (age 7) Saunders in their 1st open event. Thanks to all those who made for a great event especially race officer Angus Corrie and family! And class captain Stuart Donald.
