Mirrors at Warsash 15-16th June, Crabbing and Sailing - Top Competition

Mirrors rigging up in a muddy field before a race

Warsash is renowned for varied conditions whenever the Mirror fleet visit and 2013 was no exception. 19 competitive boats arrived on Saturday 15th June to a steady 25 kts, with a forecast of gusts over 40 kts. As the J80s were limping back into the River Hamble having had their Nationals racing cancelled, Peter Spencer, the infamous Hamble Spring Series Race Officer, wisely decided to cancel racing for the day - which allowed the younger competitors to join in with the Hamble Harbour Master's Crab Fishing Competition.

All stocks of bacon from the local shops were exhausted as the Mirror fleet pulled out scores of crabs, with Imogen Bellfield coming second in the 12 to 16 age class!

An early start on Sunday had the boats out for 4 races out in the entrance to Southampton Water. The wind was clearly exhausted from blowing so hard the day before and only one race was achieved before the wind switched off. Mass rafting and swimming became the highlight over a long break over lunch but just as the race officer was considering pulling the plug the wind kicked in and 3 cracking races were achieved.

Katie Davies and Gemma Keers from Itchenor SC were the most consistent with two wins, a second and third to take 1st overall. Rory Odell and Lewis Bowen from Northampton were hot on their heels and won the final race to take 2nd. Despite their success in the crabbing competition, and a good win in the first race, Jo Kalerdon and Imogen Bellfield couldn't maintain their success and finished 3rd; and the Shepherd sisters, who made a great effort in travelling from Restronguet SC in Cornwall, finished 4th.

The majority of the fleet were members of the National or South Area squads and the standard of competition clearly demonstrated the quality of training. A special prize was awarded to Izzy Martin and Ellie Crowden from Warsash SC who in their first Open Meeting did really well to finish all the races - maybe the first rung of the ladder. Thank you to everyone at Warsash for an excellent weekend - the next Southern Travellers is at Highcliffe on 6 July.
