Written by Ashley Shepherd

Session three of the Southwest training squad saw 6 boats from across Cornwall assemble at Restronguet SC.  The day started out with a presentation on starting by the coaches, Tom Cosier and Alex Hayman, that gave the principles of a good start.

The final South West Squad day was held at Restronguet SC on Saturday 24th March. It was very sunny, but rather too windy.

The second sesion of the south west training squad saw sailors from Looe, Mounts Bay, Penzance and Restronguet, gather at Restronguet, Falmouth. We sailed in a light breeze, the total opposite of the first session which involved several capsizes and lots of swimming.

Plans are coming together for the MCA South West Squad 2011 - 2012.  Here are the key points

  • Venue: Restronguet Sailing Club - Because we can sail in pretty much all conditions
  • Dates: All Saturdays, February 18 and 25 and March 3, 17, 25 and 31st
  • Coach: Alex Heyman (from Sidmouth, successful Mirror helm, 7th in 2011 Nationals)
  • Price: None fixed yet, but certainly lower than this year, which was £75 per sailor or was £15/day
  • Requirements: No more than one adult in a boat and helm to be a club racer. All to be members of the UK Mirror Class Association
  • Maximum number is 8 boats, but we will think how we can manage more
  • Another reason to run at Restronguet and over consecutive weeks is that we can leave boats in the dinghy park rigged.
