A chandler is a shop selling equipment, such as fittings or rope, for sailing dinghies, yachts, motor boats etc. They can be located in the high street (mainly in coastal towns, or boating centres etc. ) or in a marina or boatyard. Usually they reflect the type of sailing or boating that takes place locally in what they stock (e.g. chandlers in Falmouth stock a lot of heavy duty yacht equipment, but less lightweight dinghy items). In addition to local shops, there are many on-line chandlers, links to a few are listed below.

Fittings and ropes are normally manufactured by specialist companies such as Harken (USA), Ronstan (AUS), Allen Brothers (UK), Seasure (UK), RWO (UK), Marlow Ropes (UK). In general these companies sell their fittings or rope via an agent (i.e. a chandler), but some do have online shops where you can buy direct.

I'm pretty fussy regarding fittings, I prefer well engineered items that will last and perform well and the advise on this website reflects this. Sadly such fittings tend to be expensive.

If your local or normal on-line chandler can't supply an item, you can just search for using Google etc. (e.g. enter 'UK buy Clamcleat CL211') and you will get (probably) tens of links to places with that item for sale. Needless to say, if you are buying several items on-line, it's best to find one chandler who stocks all the items and get them all from there (easier to say than do), otherwise you end up spending more on postage.
