Can we legalise Traxu for the Mirror as soon as possible please.

No more arguement about who tacked where and in what direction etc.
GPS claimed to be able to have a potential resolution down to 2cm !
Great training aid, or even better for those in the club bar moment by moment analysis favoured by some parents.

Didn't impress me all that much. I googled and found some "replays" of races over the weekend. Looking at some of the Lasers they appear to sail upto the windward mark and turn just before they get there

You could probably achieve a similar result with a wrist-borne GPS and software like Sporttracks. I use this and a Garmin Forerunner 205 (When I run) and there is a surprising level of accuracy.

I think if it stops cheating then it would be a great idea.

Best way of that is to use video evidence. GPS would never stand up in a protest room because for liability purposes it only officially claims to be accurate to about 3-4 metres. Nobody is going to accept evidence from a system that admits it can be wrong by over a boat length.

I admit there has to be some sort of tighter regulation of rules at international events. There were cases in the Europeans of jurors following round sailors they didn't like, and the less said about the 2004 Euros the better!!

I'm saying that the official attutude of some of the top coaches is that winning is more about cheating and getting away with it than actually being a phenomenally talented sailor. This inevitably gets passed on to some sailors.

A sub (11 y.o oppy helm) crew I had this year insisted on ooching the whole time, and when I asked him to stop, he first of all said he wouldn't get caught, and then kept doing it until I had to get annoyed at him! Then he told me that all the instructors at his club had told him this was how to win at sailing. Luckily this attitude has yet to spread into the Irish mirror class, but is rife in other classes like 420s, lasers and oppies at the moment. The current attitude of many in sailing at the moment seems to be that it's okay to cheat so long as you get away with it, which is frankly sickening.

Also, some sailors tend to bend the rules to their own advantage. Winning due to a protest on a triviality is a pretty hollow victory.

I thought people went sailing to relax and forget about complicated things. This sort of nonsense should be thrown in the lake along with the people that want to introduce them.
You will have hyped up parents watching their kids sailing through long range telescopes next, so they can have post race de-briefing sessions with their kids.... Oop's sorry we already have those.. too late to stop that one then.

I agree with D Hughes, we sail because we enjoy it, it would be a shame if people with this sort of attitude spoilt others enjoyment.

i think that this is a really bad idea

Im sorry to say this but its the over competitive attitude and 'techy' focus on new stuff that keeps putting me off going back into racing. A friend of mine in another similar class told me of a teenager who has been turning up to their meetings with this attitude and putting other newcommers (and a few old hands) off going again by being a thorough 'sea lawyer' and bully on the water. Keep it simple and fun and folk will come....

i totally agree. anyway in most mirror events you can see the boats from land and if you really want to see the boats get on a rib or something and see them you don't need traxu and it will not be cheap to buy either.
