Will post pictures when I have them,
At Bassenthwaite Bass open The Grem lept out of his RS300 and riged my boat with a wire and two very long tiller extensions and tried it out in one of those quite momments.

It worked well, performance wise with all 3 sails out on a reach. just a Mirror must be one of the worst boat to climb out of on a wire.

How a bout a rule change for single handers mad enought to use it.

Pictures needed! How on earth did the rig stand it!

Apparently John Collova (Australia) has tried a trapeze in one of his many Mirror experiments.

Did that in 1973or4 on a mirror with a wooden mast......The water was very cold in November or December, the swim to the shore very long, it was only 50m! It was great fun whilst it lasted, think 5-6 springs to mind!

We have a set of wires modified from my contender awaiting fitment to our older mirror on the Selden Bermudan mast. The problem will be the location peg on the bottom of the mast, a more sensible tenon mast step would be much safer.

Err, I think Int Canoe, RS700 spring to mind!

have fun

still chasing the pictures from the wifey.

essentially correct mast step is the thing to worry about, but providing the rig tension is correct the step is in compression, there will be no side ways forces on the mast at the step and an ordinary plastic step should be fine. If your shrouds are loose then you have a problem.

The wire effectivly reduces the load on the windward shroud, sligtly increases it on the leward shround (keeps it tight, instead of slack this is good) this does impleys more compression, but it does not actually as things have to ballence, you are hanging off the mast to keep the forces in ballence. Thats how the mast stands it no net additional forces think about it, were are all the forces coming from and how are they ballencing, Draw some force triangles then compare one person out on a wire to two gorrilas hanging off the side.

So far we have Mirrors entered for the Nationals with Gaff and new rig, single handers, Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets, what about a trapeze fleet............I have heard its going to be windy but not that windy!
Would love to see a few of those single hander guys out on a wire.....

I'd be worried about putting my foot straight through the gunwale, or the mast step through the deck

And asking plebs to draw force triangles is just cruel! Ever tried to explain vectors to a 10 year old?!!

Why not set a larger one from the top of the gaff or bermudian mast? Should help add a bit of boatspeed. Back in the late 1960's I very nearly tried this with my brother, but we could not find/borrow the correct size spinnaker.

I'm going to borrow a GP14 spinnaker and pole at some point, not sure usng the top of the gaff is a good idea, it's a bit bendy...

I thought you said a bigger spinnaker, a GP14 spinnaker is only slightly bigger. Why not try one from a 505 or possibly a Flying Dutchman? A Mirror would certainly fly with one of those, or in your case - being a Dolphin - possibly a nose dive below the waves.? :~)

I would advise initially not trying it in a gale. A gaff should be able to cope with moderate winds if the fixing was about half way along its length, only go to the top in light airs to catch every zephyr.

Best of luck and let us know how you got on.

I might be able to sweet talk a 505 one actually... my dad was saying we'd have to sit on the transom to keep the bow out!
Unfortunately my boat is still in need of a lot of varnish so the experiments will have to wait till she's back on the water.<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>
