On Saturday 1st June 9 mirrors arrived at Looe to brilliant sunshine and 15 knots of wind plus mega gusts for the second Gul Mirror SW Travellers event & Enterprise Open.
In the first race, Tom Cosier & Nick Pugh and Esme & Scarlett Shepherd went right up the first beat having done split tacks before the start which was definitely a good idea as they rounded in second and third just behind Martin Egan & Harvey Martin. Esther & Lauren Bowdler were 4th and Rebecca Stevens & Niamh O'Neill 5th. On the third beat Tom & Nick found a good shift on the right to go into the lead which they held to the finish with Martin & Harvey second and Becca & Niamh third.
The wind picked up a little for race two and this was won By Rebecca & Niamh. Tom & Nick were over the line on the start so sailed exceptionally well down, especially down some of the reaches to catch up from near the back of the fleet after their individual recall, and take second place ahead of Esme & Scarlett.
By the third race (also a Looe club race) the wind had picked up even more and was about 25-30 knots so things started to get a bit exciting! Becca & Niamh just about managed to hold first with Martin & Harvey very close behind. Tom & Nick pulled the spinnaker pole eye off their mast so could only manage 3rd.
Thank you to Looe sailing club for hosting the event and especially the race committee - It can’t have been warm sat in the RIB all day, I was freezing! Thanks to Gul for the brilliant prizes. I look forward to seeing everyone at the next GUL South West Travellers at Penzance and Mounts bay in two weeks time.
