a short length of wire with a soft eye in one end and a hard eye in the other

A jib strop is only required on boats with Gunter rig. The soft eye goes over the top of the gunter mast along with the shrouds and the forestay. The jib halyard goes through the block. Some racers omit the block to reduce windage.

This jib strop is the original one from 20272 (Lisa Peakman's boat) so dates to round 1970. It is galvanised wire with alloy ferrules and features a Holt-Allen HA78 block. Later strops were stainless steel wire with copper ferrules.
