A healthy fleet of thirty two Mirrors from as far afield as Falmouth, Essex and Shetland congregated at Annandale Sailing Club in Dumfries and Galloway for their Scottish Championship on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July.

The diverse fleet included several members of the World Championship squad as well as many Open Meeting first timers, however competition was close and interesting throughout. Despite the enticing football match the Race Officer was determined to complete the three scheduled races on Saturday, a decision that was justified when Sunday dawned windless.

The breeze on Saturday was ideal in strength, but decidedly variable in direction suiting the inland sailors. Positions changed throughout the figure of eight course, but it was Lily Carlisle & Becky Wallbank from Ripon that led across the finish line.

The Race Officer concentrated the course in the centre of the loch for race 2 utilising the best of the wind. Josh & Joric Gebhard from Derwent were unchallenged showing great spinnaker technique on the downwind zig-zag.

A traditional triangle-sausage course was set for race 3 with Josh & Joric once again coming out on top. Anna Mackenzie & Katie Greenwood from Royal Windermere scored their best result in second place.

After the overnight thunder, conditions were not promising for Sunday with barely a breath of wind and clear skies, however the competitors basked in the hot sunshine and enjoyed an early lunch. The wind eventually developed from the north west building and swinging north throughout the afternoon.

A short triangular course suited the strong Royal Windermere team who dominated race 4 with Emma Houlihan & Emily Mackenzie getting the better of David & Bethany Grey.

The developing wind enabled a longer course to be set for race 5. Lily Carlisle & Becky Wallbank scored a second race win to secure their position as first junior. Second place went to Emma & Emily who were the first youths overall.

The winners of the Scottish Championship were Josh & Joric Gebhard who sailed consistently well throughout the weekend with their only blip taking the wrong course in race 4.
