A Mirror dinghy with sails lowered, but boom held up by a boom crutch

A boom crutch is a device to hold the outboard end of the boom (and gaff) up in the air. An alternative to a topping lift. Useful when you are reefing, rowing, or if you want to have an over-boom tent. Lots of possible designs, this one is was designed by Peter Sanders from the Netherlands in 2015.

Peter has also posted a video of how it works on Facebook.
