Sunshine and force 3 to 4 winds greeted the fleet of 47 Mirrors assembled on the 9th and 10th of June to contest the ‘Brolac’ Trophy in the first Mirror Open Meeting to be held on Chew Valley Lake during the summer months.
The honours went not unnaturally to previous National Champion, John Taylor of Keynes Park S.C. (148) taking the 1st in the practice race, 1st in the 2nd and 3rd Trophy Races, making his 3rd from the back of the fleet in the last race his “piece de resistance.”
In 2nd place came Graham and Paul Dane of C.V.L.S.C. sailing Scooby-Doo to take 2nd in the Practice Race, with a 3rd, 2nd and 2nd in the Trophy Races. These young sailors who were the first to the windward mark in three of the four races, and were only overtaken by John Taylor
in the last heat of the first race, will most certainly he heard of again. The ‘John Hall’ Trophy and the Junior Prize also dropped into the Trophy bag of the Dane brothers.
Club rivals Nicky and Barry Smith finished 3rd overall with the tussle for the 2nd place only being decided in the last race, after the Smiths’ were forced to take evasive action at the tricky windward mark. These lads, fourteen and twelve years old respectively, are already sailing
with the C.V.L.S.C. Fireball Fleet.
A new sail of ‘Boats’ for the somewhat calmer winds of the Sunday racing, paid handsomely for Roger Pedley of Poole Y.C. sailing Neutrino to first place in the 3rd race, giving him fourth place overall.
S. Hobbs of Pegasus S.C., A Hatteisley of Spinnaker S.C. and P. Raes of Bristol Corinthian took 5th, 6th and 7th place respectively, leaving the next five places to C.V.L.S.C. helms. An enjoyable event, with the home club feeling quite well pleased.
