In the centenary year of Brightlingsea Sailing Club, it was fitting that its annual Pyefleet Week was the most successful for a number of yeaxs, helped by the generous sponsorship of Volvo dealers Lancasters and some glorious weather. Over 150 boats competed in 11 different classes, the Mirrors being the second largest, with 20 boats racing. With some good and still improving cadet members, along with some experienced adults sailing with their children, competition was keen — as evidenced by the three general recalls needed before the second race got underway!
Overall winner, with four first places to count, was Julian Lord, an experienced 505 and Fireball sailor, crewed alternately by his small daughters Melanie and Stephanie. With their Storrar & Bax sails, they had a speed advantage over the rest of the fleet and generally sailed well, apart from making some indifferent starts. Runners-up and winners of the third race were cadet members Justin and Tristan Miller, who were awarded the Cadet Shield for the best performance in any class by under 18’s. The next three boats fmished level on points, youngsters Daniel and James Willett taking third overall with the better discard.
Next year’s Week runs from 30th July to 4th August and will again provide good sailing, with a full family orientated social programme.
