Offshore of Durban:

The fleet was led by Perthites James Komweibel (AUS) and his son Harry, David Meehan (AUS), and his nephew Henry Olsen. The fleet was set up by Race Officer Kevin Bingham, who set a sausage, triangle, sausage for the first race, followed by two quick fire windward leeward courses where the fleet sprinted around twice. James and Harry, who started the day in fourth, were in a class of their own, taking the first two wins of the day and a sterling second in the final race.

James, who normally sails an Optimist [Editor note: James is an adult, maybe he used to sail an optimist?) , enjoys the tactical elements of Mirror sailing and has been sailing with his son Harry since 1991 [Editors note: this makes James' son Harry 34). Meehan, on the other hand, had a successful day, finishing third in the windward leeward course after a few boats got in front on the beats. His favorite moment of the day was winning the last race of the day and getting a cheer from the boats watching. The homegrown local team, Thomas and Kai Funke, performed out of their boots, pushing the two Australian teams around the course and finishing in third place. They were happy with their results so far and are only a third of the way into the event, with lots of sailing still to come. Wind is looking good for the next four days, so let's see what that brings. Racing starts at around 1pm on Day Three of the Marriott Mirror Worlds, with heavy rain predicted in the morning.
