The UK Mirror Class Association has received a training grant from the RYA, and is making funds available for training in Scotland. The grant from the RYA is to develop junior training and can be used to subsidise training as long as there is one junior in the boat, so an adult and child combination is acceptable. The funds are to provide a specialist coach, RIB fuel and support.
If you need to get your Mirror dinghy and/or sails measured in order to compete in a UK national event, then you will need to contact an approved RYA measurer,
Measurers are accredited by the RYA, not by the Mirror Class Association. Boat measurers are generally class-specific, whilst sail-only measurers are qualified to approve sails for any class. Boat measurers can also certify sails.
Are you on our map?
The map below shows the sailing clubs in Scotland where we have some information, however slight, on Mirror dinghy sailing activity. The red markers show clubs where there is an active fleet of 4 or more boats. Yellow markers show clubs where there are a few boats but the Mirror is not one of the clubs organised classes. Blue markers show clubs where we have some clues as to the presence of Mirror dinghy sailors, but no hard information.
There is no doubt that the Mirror Class is struggling in Scotland. There are very few registered Class Association members and active groups in only a handful of clubs. That said, there are scattered boats throughout Scotland that could perhaps be mobilised and motivated.
The key problem is that the vast majority of Scottish junior sailors are in Optimist and Topper classes, which are thriving. Double-handed junior sailing is not popular. The RYAS is promoting the RS Feva, though this also is proving slow to take-off also.
