The first Mirror Winter Squad training session took place at Poole yacht club over the weekend of 20th and 21st of November. Five boats were in attendance with coaching provided by the Mirror Class Association in the form of Peter Robinson, assisted by Glen Courage and Alistair Watkins. The weekend was punctuated by a cold and variable breeze, along with a short chop and strong tide caught everyone out once or twice. The squad ran through a variety of boat handling exercises in both morning sessions including: follow the leader, tacking on the whistle and gate-starts. This formed the basis of the squad’s training and was complimented by some competitive racing in the afternoon sessions with the Mirror National Junior squad who were also training in Poole harbour over the weekend.

However, this particular day was to be not only my first visit to Beaver SC, but also my first ‘Frolic’ – a much talked about event amongst the juniors in the north. So, despite the hour and the temperature, I was reasonably keen to start my day. From a weather point of view, the day couldn’t have been better. Cloudless blue sky, plenty of sunshine and a fair wind – certainly enough to create some great sailing, even if it was a bit chilly.
